As you all probably have heard by now, a 8.9 earthquake hit northern Japan yesterday. My relatives live in the southern part of the country and are okay. They were not substantially impacted. Also, Colleen My.'s daughter-in-law's family are okay too. When you see the videos and pictures on TV, one cannot really comprehend the devastation the Japanese people are going through. It is heartbreaking to see these images of a disaster that will forever change lives.
The tsunami consisted of 23 feet high monster waves travelling 6 miles inland. This is the most powerful and worst earthquake in Japan since recorded time back in 1900. It's the 5th worst earthquake in the world. The earthquake lasted about 5 minutes and that's a very long time in such circumstances. When I lived there, I remember one that lasted about 30 seconds and it was scary, so I can't image 5 minutes of pure helplessness. There was no time for people to reach safety and hundreds were killed or are missing. And there was damage to a nuclear power plant and they are monitoring for a possible nuclear meltdown.
Say a prayer for Japan and the Japanese people......
Ronna I am so happy to hear your family and Colleen's family are safe. The footage on the t.v. is so unreal of the damage done.
